Swimming to Florida

It appears that my taper workouts will have to change. At this point, I am swimming (or more specifically PULLING) my way to Florida since I'm having issues with my hip. I was very lucky not to have fractured/broken any bones in that bike crash two weekends ago. I did, however, really whack my hip when I hit the pavement. The evening after the accident my hip was really swollen. The bursa in my hip are still inflamed--with blood. The sports medicine doc was going to give me a cortisone shot in the hip to alleviate the pain yesterday, but instead ended up drawing off a few cc's of blood. Yeah, I almost passed out seeing that syringe! Her Rx: ice the area for 30 mins 3xs a day to get the swelling down; no biking or running; use a pull-bouy in the pool. We will reevaluate by the end of the week. If I can get the swelling under control, I can then go in Mon/Tues for a cortisone shot before I leave for Florida.

My PT and my coaches say I am trained and will still be ok for the race. I am trying to remain calm, follow doctors orders, and focus on getting all my stuff ready for the trip. But then there's that nagging little voice in the back of my head, screaming "WHAT???? You've got to be f*%#ing kidding me?!" I turn my bike in on Saturday to ship, and won't see it again until maybe Thursday or Friday next week. That would mean the last time on my bike would have been this past Saturday, and the last time I ran...well too long ago. Don't panic, don't panic. Just make like Dora in Finding Nemo: "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim." (Right, Marit?)

Your panic is normal - I know you're going to be fine on race day, even with a sore hip. I promise you that you'll be in a zone of happiness. :)

this will be a great taper for you:)...so many people have the tendency to overdo but now you won't have that choice! just be confident that you have done all your training and this rest will serve you well.
i have heard that cortisone shots can work miracles and i may be getting one this friday but in the meantime, have you thought about pool running just to keep going through the cycing/running motion?
or are you not supposed to move it at all?

Kate - after IM AZ I was too injured to run/bike/pool swim. Coach had me swimming 5x a week to maintain fitness. My first ride back I was floored to feel like I had lost nothing in two months! Later in the year I quit it all for a few weeks - and came back horribly out of shape. The swim will keep you fit, and you will be so ready for this race and so well tapered. Really.

Get healthy fast!!

You are getting some good thoughts from the other ladies. I just want to say that I use that quote from Nemo quite a lot in my life whenever I have to push through something, even non-swimming related. (Ellen DeGeneres IS pretty cool.) Hope that you heal even quicker than your doctor expects.

Seriously - this will be the BEST taper ever! Honestly - you will be SO MUCH better prepared now. Don't panic - this way you will NOT work out extra (which we ALL do at some point leading up to a big race) - and you will be more than ready. It takes your body about a month to really absorb the LONG workouts and work leading up to a race like this. Literally, the money is already in the bank. Now it's time to relax and taper!

See you in Florida!

YOu are going to do it! I am amazed by your tenacity and know you will pull through. I am glad you did not do the cortisone shot, thought, I have heard the long term effects outweigh the short term benefits. Keep us updated we are all rooting for you!

I agree, this is RECOVERY and taper and rest that you would never let yourself see if you were uninjured.

You will be just fine...and you got a lot of us cheering you on along the way! That said, I do hope you have a great race and that hip keeps quiet for you!

Jeff also got injured leading up to IM Brazil. Hated the inactivity...but swimming DID help. He also said at this point, the training is, literally, done. Be sure to have something in your transition pack for the run, in case the hip flares up late in the day (he used diclofenac, and sprinted to the line!)

Repeat after me: It's going to be okay. Stay in the "box" ..... only what you can handle and control at the given moment you are in. Trust what you have done, and know there is someone on those sidelines posing as a Texan screaming her brains out for you all day long!

:-) Mary!
